The first half of 2022 has observed a total of 5,181\nnew vehicle sales, of which 2,668 were passenger vehicles, 2,175 light\ncommercial vehicles, and 338 medium and heavy commercial vehicles. By\ncomparison, the first half of 2021 saw 4,893 new vehicles sold. On a\ntwelve-month cumulative basis, a total of 9,716 new vehicles were sold at the\nend of June, representing an 8.1% y\/y increase from the 8,989 sold over the\ncomparable period a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1090\" height=\"591\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-223.png?fit=740%2C401&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-223.png 1090w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-223-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-223-768x416.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-223-1024x555.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-223-250x136.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-223-150x81.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1090px) 100vw, 1090px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 427 new passenger vehicles\nwere sold during June, an increase of 5.4% m\/m from the 405 sold in May, but a 0.7%\ny\/y decrease from the 430 vehicles sold in June 2021. On a 12-month cumulative\nbasis, new passenger vehicle sales have increased by 23.2% y\/y to 4,875.\nYear-to-date, new passenger vehicles sales exceeded 2020 and 2021 levels, with 2,668\nnew passenger vehicles sold so far this year, a 74.5% and 17.2% increase from\nthe new passenger vehicles sold over the same period in 2020 and 2021,\nrespectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1091\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-224.png?fit=740%2C329&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-224.png 1091w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-224-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-224-768x341.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-224-1024x455.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-224-250x111.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-224-150x67.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1091px) 100vw, 1091px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 439 new commercial vehicles\nwere sold in June, representing an increase of 20.3% m\/m and 6.3% y\/y. While\nall three subcategories recorded better sales than in May, the month-on-month\nincrease was primarily driven by a rebound in light commercial vehicle sales of\n21.4% m\/m. There was a noticeably drop in Toyota\u2019s light commercial vehicle\nsales in both May and June following the temporary closure of the production plant\nin KwaZulu-Natal. Despite this, light commercial vehicle sales were still in\nline with the monthly average for the year as customers switched to other\nbrands who were able to deliver new light commercial vehicles. Medium- and\nheavy commercial vehicle sales fell 31.6% y\/y and 19.0% y\/y respectively, while\nlight commercial vehicles sales rose 13.3% y\/y. On a twelve-month cumulative\nbasis, light commercial vehicles sales fell by 4.3% y\/y to 4,135, medium\ncommercial vehicles fell by 6.3% y\/y to 178, while heavy commercial vehicles\nincreased by 1.5% y\/y to 528.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1093\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-225.png?fit=740%2C328&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-225.png 1093w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-225-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-225-768x341.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-225-1024x454.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-225-250x111.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-225-150x67.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1093px) 100vw, 1093px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Toyota continues to lead the new passenger vehicle sales segment with 31.7% of the segment sales year-to-date, followed by Volkswagen with 20.4% of the market share. The two top brands maintained their large gap over the rest of the market with Kia and Suzuki following with 9.0% and 7.8% of the market, respectively, leaving the remaining 31.0% of the market to other brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1054\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-226.png?fit=740%2C569&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-226.png 1054w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-226-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-226-768x590.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-226-1024x787.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-226-195x150.png 195w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-226-150x115.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1054px) 100vw, 1054px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On a\nyear-to-date basis, Toyota maintained its dominance in the light commercial\nvehicle space with a 48.8% market share, followed by Nissan with 13.6% of the\nmarket. Hino continues to lead the medium commercial vehicle segment with 29.3%\nof sales year-to-date, closely followed by Mercedes-Benz with 24.0% of the\nmarket share. Scania remained the leader in the heavy and extra-heavy\ncommercial vehicle segment with 33.1% of the market share year-to-date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In context, June\u2019s new vehicle sales\nfigure was in line with the monthly average for the year. On a 12-month\ncumulative basis, new passenger vehicle sales have rebounded to the\npre-pandemic levels seen in 2019 but seems unlikely to exceed it meaningfully\nin the short-term. New commercial vehicle sales continue to hover around the 4,800\nlevel on a 12-month cumulative basis, where it has been for the past two years\nnow, indicating stagnant demand in this sector.
