In value terms, approvals declined by N$47.6\nmillion to N$94.8 million, a 33.4% decrease from March. No building plans were\napproved or completed during April. A total of 208 building plans were\ncompleted during the month with a value of N$103.7 million. Year-to-date,\nN$651.5 million worth of building plans have been approved, 21.0% less in value\nthan during the corresponding period in 2019. On a twelve-month cumulative\nbasis, 1,817 building plans have been approved worth approximately N$1.82\nbillion, 9.5% lower in value terms than cumulative approvals in May 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1056\" height=\"498\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-135.png?fit=740%2C349&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-135.png 1056w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-135-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-135-768x362.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-135-1024x483.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-135-250x118.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-135-150x71.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1056px) 100vw, 1056px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">83 additions to properties were\napproved in May with a value of N$60.7 million, an increase of 41.5% in terms\nof value from the additions approved in March and 78.0% y\/y higher than May\n2019. Year-to-date 499 additions to properties have been approved with a total\nvalue of N$233.6 million, a decrease of 22.4% y\/y in number and a decrease of\n30.1% y\/y in value terms. On a 12-month cumulative basis, the number of\nadditions approved has declined by 9.8% y\/y and 17.1% y\/y in value terms.\nDuring the month 161 additions have been completed with a combined value of\nN$53.9 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1045\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-137.png?fit=740%2C349&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25070\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-137.png 1045w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-137-300x142.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-137-768x362.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-137-1024x483.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-137-250x118.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-137-150x71.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1045px) 100vw, 1045px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">New residential\nunits accounted for 28 of the approvals registered in May, 18 more than in\nMarch, but 14 fewer than in May 2019. In value terms, N$34.1 million worth of\nresidential units were approved in May, up 225.1% m\/m (from March), but down\n25.7% y\/y. Year-to-date residential unit approvals have dropped by 49.1% y\/y in\nnumber terms and 46.7% in value. The 12-month cumulative residential approvals\npaint a similar picture, recording a 46.1% y\/y decrease in number of approvals\nand 28.0% y\/y decrease in value. As building plan approvals are a leading\nindicator it points to diminishing construction activity going forward, albeit\nin the residential space. 46 new residential units worth N$49.8 million were\ncompleted during the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1059\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-114.png?fit=740%2C345&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25071\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-114.png 1059w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-114-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-114-768x358.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-114-1024x478.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-114-250x117.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-114-150x70.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1059px) 100vw, 1059px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">For the first time since July 2018\nthere were no approvals for commercial and industrial building plans (excluding\nthe lockdown in April). The lack of approvals in May is somewhat unsurprising\ngiven that businesses were severely hit by the lockdown with few financially\nable to invest in capital investment projects. On a 12-month cumulative basis,\nthe number of commercial and industrial approvals has increased by 36.6% y\/y in\nMay to 56 units, worth approximately N$652.9 million, an increase of 27.0% in\nvalue terms over the prior 12-month period.
