However, this is a decrease of 21.5% y\/y from the 977 new vehicles\nsold in June 2019. Year-to-date 3,517 vehicles have been sold, of which 1,530\nwere passenger vehicles, 1,766 were light commercial vehicles, and 221 were\nmedium and heavy commercial vehicles. On a rolling 12-month basis, a total of\n8,595 new vehicles were sold as at June 2020, representing a contraction of\n24.7% from the 11,412 sold over the comparable period a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1108\" height=\"579\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-131.png?fit=740%2C387&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-131.png 1108w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-131-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-131-768x401.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-131-1024x535.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-131-250x131.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-131-150x78.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1108px) 100vw, 1108px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">345 New\npassenger vehicles were sold during June, increasing by 56.8% m\/m, although\nthis increase is from a low base. On a year-on-year basis, June\u2019s new passenger\nvehicle sales were 8.7% lower than the 378 vehicles sold a year ago.\nYear-to-date passenger vehicle sales rose to 1,530 units, down 38.1% when compared\nto the number sold in the first half of last year. Twelve-month cumulative\npassenger vehicle sales fell 0.9% m\/m and 27.3% y\/y. Passenger vehicles have\nmade up 43.5% of the total number of new vehicles sold in the first six months\nof 2020, compared to 46.4% in the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1078\" height=\"463\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-133.png?fit=740%2C318&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24993\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-133.png 1078w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-133-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-133-768x330.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-133-1024x440.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-133-250x107.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-133-150x64.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1078px) 100vw, 1078px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">A total of 422\nnew commercial vehicles were sold in June, representing a 68.1% m\/m increase,\nbut a 29.5% y\/y contraction. The monthly increase is again from a low base. Of\nthe 422 commercial vehicles sold in June, 386 were classified as light\ncommercial vehicles, 12 as medium commercial vehicles and 24 as heavy or extra\nheavy commercial vehicles. On a twelve-month cumulative basis, light commercial\nvehicle sales dropped 24.6% y\/y, while medium commercial vehicle sales rose\n6.1% y\/y, and heavy commercial vehicle sales fell by 13.7% y\/y. While medium-\nand heavy commercial vehicles continue to record growth on a twelve-month\ncumulative basis, the light segment of the market continues to see lower\nvolumes sold than in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1075\" height=\"632\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-130.png?fit=740%2C435&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-130.png 1075w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-130-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-130-768x452.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-130-1024x602.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-130-250x147.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-130-150x88.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1075px) 100vw, 1075px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Volkswagen\nnarrowly leads the passenger vehicle sales segment with 30.4% of the segment\nsales year-to-date. Toyota retained second place with 29.5% of the market share\nas at the end of June. They were followed by Kia and Hyundai with 6.5% and 5.6%\nof the market respectively, while the rest of the passenger vehicle market was\nshared by several other competitors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1067\" height=\"821\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-110.png?fit=740%2C569&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24995\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-110.png 1067w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-110-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-110-768x591.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-110-1024x788.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-110-195x150.png 195w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-110-150x115.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Toyota, with a\nstrong market share of 56.4% year-to-date commands the light commercial vehicle\nsales segment. Nissan remains in the second position in the segment with 13.7%\nof the market, while Ford makes up third place with 10.3% of the year-to-date\nsales. Mercedes leads the medium commercial vehicle segment with 31.7% of sales\nyear-to-date and remains number one in the heavy and extra-heavy commercial\nvehicle segment with 22.3% of the market share year-to-date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">June saw the\nnumber of new vehicles sales increasing quite substantially on a monthly basis.\nHowever, as pointed out earlier in this report, this increase is from a\nrelatively low base as vehicle sales are merely recovering after very low\nactivity during lockdown. In the first half of this year, new vehicle sales are\ndown 33.9% y\/y compared to the same period in 2019. We expect new vehicle sales\nto remain under pressure and do not foresee any substantial increases in the\nnumber sold for at least the rest of the year, as economic conditions are\nexpected to remain weak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>767 New vehicles were sold in June, an increase of 62.8% m\/m from the 471 new vehicles sold in May.
