On a twelve-month cumulative basis,\na total of 10,394 new vehicles were sold as at January 2020, representing a\ncontraction of 11.4% from the 11,733 sold over the same period a year ago. 2020\nis thus off to sluggish start as illustrated by the lowest monthly new vehicles\nsales number since May 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1041\" height=\"546\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-123.png?fit=740%2C388&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-123.png 1041w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-123-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-123-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-123-1024x537.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-123-250x131.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-123-150x79.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1041px) 100vw, 1041px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">291 new passenger vehicles were sold during January, a contraction of 7.3%\nm\/m from the 314 passenger vehicles sold in December, and a decline of 14.9%\ny\/y from the 342 new passenger vehicles sold in January 2019. On a rolling\n12-month basis, new passenger vehicle sales fell 1.1% m\/m and 10.6% y\/y at the\nend of January, and were down 54.2% from the peak in April 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1027\" height=\"443\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-125.png?fit=740%2C319&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-125.png 1027w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-125-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-125-768x331.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-125-1024x442.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-125-250x108.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-125-150x65.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1027px) 100vw, 1027px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Commercial vehicle sales declined to 380 units in January, representing\na contraction of 5.0% m\/m, but an increase of 13.1% y\/y. During the month 335 light\ncommercial vehicles, 14 medium commercial vehicles, and 31 heavy commercial\nvehicles were sold. On a year-on-year basis, light commercial sales have\nincreased by 11.3%, medium commercial vehicles were flat, and heavy and extra\nheavy vehicle sales rose 47.6% y\/y. On a twelve-month cumulative basis, light\ncommercial vehicle sales have declined by 14.9% y\/y, medium commercial vehicles\nrose by 9.0% y\/y, and heavy commercial vehicles sales rose 17.6% y\/y.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1022\" height=\"594\" src=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-122.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-122.png 1022w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-122-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-122-768x446.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-122-250x145.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-122-150x87.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1022px) 100vw, 1022px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Volkswagen started the year\noff with a 32.6% market share of new passenger vehicles sold, followed by\nToyota with a 21.3% market share. They were followed by Kia and Hyundai with\n8.9% and 7.9% of the market respectively, while the rest of the passenger\nvehicle market was shared by several other competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1010\" height=\"779\" src=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-102.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-102.png 1010w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-102-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-102-768x592.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-102-194x150.png 194w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-102-150x116.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1010px) 100vw, 1010px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Toyota meanwhile started the\nyear off with a solid grip on the light commercial vehicle market with a 57.6%\nmarket share, with Nissan in second place with a 15.5% market share. Ford and\nVolkswagen claimed 9.6% and 5.1% of the number of new light commercial vehicles\nsold during the month, respectively. Mercedes lead the medium commercial vehicle\ncategory with 42.9% of sales, while Volvo was number one in the heavy and\nextra-heavy commercial vehicle segment with 25.8% of the market share during\nthe month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Bottom\nLine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Cumulative new vehicle sales fell to the lowest level in ten years on a\nrolling 12-month basis. This is a consequence of the incessant recessionary\nenvironment we find ourselves in, which is characterised by depressed business\nand consumer confidence, as well as lower government spending. The low sales\nfigures show that both consumers and businesses continue to face economic\nhardship, with many preferring to hold on to their existing vehicles for\nlonger, or opting to buy second-hand vehicles instead.
