Year-to-date, 7,841 vehicles\nhave been sold of which 3,534 were passenger vehicles, 3,763 were light\ncommercial vehicles, and 544 were medium and heavy commercial vehicles. This is\nthe lowest year-to-date sales witnessed since 2009. On a twelve-month\ncumulative basis, new vehicle sales continued its downward trend. 10,680 new\nvehicles were sold over the last twelve months, a 10.2% contraction from the\nprevious twelve months and also the lowest level since 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1158\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-108.png?fit=740%2C360&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-108.png 1158w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-108-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-108-768x373.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-108-1024x498.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-108-250x122.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-108-150x73.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1158px) 100vw, 1158px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>320 new passenger vehicles were sold in September, contracting by 11.1%\nm\/m and 5.9% y\/y. Year-to-date passenger vehicle sales rose to 3,534 units,\ndown 11.1% when compared to the year-to-date figure recorded in September 2018.\nOn an annual basis, twelve-month cumulative passenger vehicle sales fell 9.7%\ny\/y as the number of passenger vehicles sold continued to decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1148\" height=\"508\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-110.png?fit=740%2C327&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-110.png 1148w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-110-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-110-768x340.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-110-1024x453.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-110-250x111.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-110-150x66.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1148px) 100vw, 1148px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 486 new commercial vehicles were sold in September, increasing\nof 8.5% m\/m but contracted by 24.8% y\/y. Of the 486 commercial vehicles sold in\nSeptember, 405 were classified as light commercial vehicles, 25 as medium\ncommercial vehicles and 56 as heavy or extra heavy commercial vehicles. On a\ntwelve-month cumulative basis, light commercial vehicle sales dropped 12.7%\ny\/y, while medium commercial vehicle sales and heavy commercial vehicles rose 0.41%\ny\/y and 12.3% y\/y, respectively. &nbsp;There\nhas been an increase in the sale of heavy commercial vehicles on a year-to-year\nbasis, from the 6.9% recorded in the preceding month. This illustrates a slight\nincrease in the demand for durable goods by businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1147\" height=\"586\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-107.png?fit=740%2C378&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-107.png 1147w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-107-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-107-768x392.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-107-1024x523.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-107-250x128.png 250w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-107-150x77.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1147px) 100vw, 1147px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Volkswagen leads the passenger\nvehicle sales segment with 30.4% of the segment sales year-to-date. Toyota in\nsecond place with 29.7% of the market-share as at the end of September. Kia,\nMercedes, Hyundai and Ford each command around 5.0% of the market in the\npassenger vehicles segment, leaving the remaining 19.4% of the market to other brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1066\" height=\"816\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ijg.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-87.png?fit=740%2C567&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-87.png 1066w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-87-300x230.png 300w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-87-768x588.png 768w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-87-1024x784.png 1024w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-87-196x150.png 196w, https:\/\/ijg.net\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/5-87-150x115.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1066px) 100vw, 1066px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Toyota retains a strong year-to-date market share of 58.5% and remains\nthe market leader in the light commercial vehicle segment. Nissan remains in\nsecond position in the segment with 11.7% of the market, while Ford makes up\nthird place with 9.3% of the year-to-date sales. Hino leads the medium\ncommercial vehicle segment with 37.2% of sales year-to-date, while Scania was\nnumber one in the heavy- and extra-heavy commercial vehicle segment with 34.8%\nof the market share year-to-date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Bottom\nLine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vehicle sales remain under pressure, with the year-to-date new vehicle\nsales in 2019 currently below 2010 levels, and the total new vehicle sales for\nthe last 12 months down 10.2% from the same period in 2018. The number of\nvehicle sales recorded continues to decrease and any prospects of growth in the\nshort-term remains dim. Latest data from the Namibia Statistics Agency recorded\n2.6% contraction in the Namibian economy.
